Hidden batteries are becoming a major fire risk for recyclers — and Galloo is acting early.

The Belgium-based recycling group Galloo has selected WeSort.AI GmbH’s X.Sort M system to strengthen battery detection capabilities at one of its facilities, aiming to reduce fire risks linked to hidden lithium-ion batteries in waste streams.

The installation reflects a broader industry shift as recyclers across Europe face growing challenges associated with battery contamination in mixed material flows. Undetected batteries have become one of the leading causes of fires at sorting and recycling plants, increasing pressure on operators to invest in earlier and more precise detection technologies.

X.Sort combines X-ray transmission (XRT) and AI-based analysis to scan material flows in real time and identify hidden hazards based on density and structure.

The project also highlights how AI-driven detection systems are increasingly moving from pilot deployments to industrial-scale adoption within the recycling sector.

As battery volumes continue to rise alongside electrification and consumer electronics growth, technologies focused on fire prevention, material identification and safer sorting infrastructure are rapidly becoming a critical part of modern recycling operations.
